In an Effort by the University to Conserve Resources Regarding Electricity Consumption
Prof. Al-Dhafiri: Kuwait University Launches the Initiative (Partners in Conservation)
In line with Kuwait University's keenness to preserve the country’s resources, particularly in terms of conserving electricity consumption, and in alignment with the state’s policies and directives in this regard, the university has launched a campaign titled "Partners in Conservation". This initiative aims to raise awareness among university affiliates about the importance of reducing electricity consumption.
In this regard, Acting Secretary-General and University Spokesperson, Prof. Fayez Al-Dhafiri, clarified that Kuwait University has been meticulously planning since last May to address the increasing rates of electricity consumption and to work on its conservation within the framework of activating the national strategy aimed at regulating electricity consumption. This strategy, adopted by the state to preserve energy for future generations and to allocate it as much as possible for humanitarian uses, led the university to issue Circular No. 88 dated May 9, 2024, concerning the conservation of electricity consumption within the university campus. The circular mandates the implementation of certain measures aimed at reducing consumption without compromising the delivery of essential services.
In recognition of Kuwait University's vital and educational role in society, and its constant commitment to being at the forefront of implementing public directives and policies in the country, and given the current situation in Kuwait with record-high temperatures leading to unprecedented electricity loads, Prof. Al-Dhafiri emphasized the university's commitment to conserving electricity consumption in alignment with Kuwait University's strategic sustainability goals (18-28). Therefore, Kuwait University has launched an initiative for energy conservation to regulate consumption by:
- Setting air conditioning units to 23 degrees Celsius during official working hours, and to 25 degrees Celsius after official working hours in administrative buildings, and after 5 PM in colleges during weekends.
- Adjusting motion sensors related to corridor lighting to reduce the duration.
- Turning off lights and electrical devices in unused classrooms, facilities, and laboratories during official working hours and after official working hours.
- Notifying Kuwait University staff about the importance of conserving the use of high or medium voltage electrical appliances (such as coffee machines, heaters, etc.) during peak hours from 11 AM until the end of official working hours.
- Encouraging university staff to use natural lighting instead of electric lighting whenever possible.
Prof. Al-Dhafiri called upon all members of Kuwait University to adhere to guidelines for electricity consumption, urging them to be partners in safeguarding the state's resources, and wishing everyone safety.
