The President of Kuwait University Professor Yousef Al-Roumi met with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwaiti Sports Club for the Deaf Hamad Muhammad Al-Marri, the club’s Secretary Anwar Al-Harbi, and the counselor in sign language training, Dr. Muhammad Al-Ramzi. The visit aimed to discuss cooperation between the university and the club and to listen to their needs and suggestions which can benefit the deaf students at Kuwait University.
Professor Al-Roumi stressed that Kuwait University pays great attention to students with disabilities, especially students with hearing impairment. He explained that there is a dedicated department in the Deanship of Students’ Affairs which provides services required by students with disabilities.
Professor Al-Roumi added that the university offers several academic programs which are suitable for disabled students. He also said that Kuwait University works hand in hand with the Civil Service Commision to provide suitable jobs for them after graduation. In addition, a sign language course was approved in the College of Education. The idea of the course was proposed by the Acting Dean of the College of Education, Professor Fayez Al-Dhafiri. The course is currently in the implementation stage.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwaiti Sports Club for the Deaf Hamad Muhammad Al-Marri praised Kuwait University’s efforts in taking care of the hearing-impaired students and empowering them in the university community. He indicated that the association gave several proposals and recommendations which can benefit students with hearing impairment.
