Under the patronage of the President of Kuwait University Professor Yousef Muhammad Al-Roumi, the College of social sciences represented by the Center of Women’s Studies and Research inaugurated the ‘Kuwaiti Women’s Day’ event. The event was attended by his excellency Mr. Marzoug Al-Ghanim, the Speaker of the Kuwait National Assembly, Professor Murdhi Al-Ayash, Kuwait University’s Acting Secretary General, and Professor Maha Al-Sejari, Acting Dean of the College of Social Sciences. The event was also attended by the former Minister Of Social Affairs and the former Minister Of Economic Affairs Mrs. Hind Al-sabeeh and Dr. Nouriya Al-Awadhi, in addition to a group of university leaders, deans and assistant deans of colleges, and heads of scientific departments at the College Of Social Sciences. Some faculty members and students were also in attendance.
The National Assembly Speaker Mr. Marzoug Al-Ghanim announced his intention to submit an amendment to the election law that would facilitate opportunities for more Kuwaiti women to become members of the parliament.
Dr. Fayza Al-Khurafi stated that this ceremony is an honor for all Kuwaiti women. She expressed her sincere gratitude to those in charge of the event. Dr. Fayza was awarded for her numerous achievements. She held the position of President of Kuwait University for several years, and she was the first women in the middle east to hold such a position.
In his speech, the President of Kuwait University Professor Yousef Muhammad Al-Roumi stated that women are given a special care in Islam, and women’s affairs were mentioned in more than ten Suras in the holy Quran. This indicates the high status of women in the eyes of Islam, a position that women were not granted in any other religion.

expressed her happiness for the attendance of the National Assembly Speaker Mr. Marzoug Al-Ghanim, and she thanked the President of Kuwait University Professor Yousef Muhammad Al-Roumi for his generous sponsorship of this event. The event coincides with the day Kuwaiti women were granted their political rights, nearly 17 years ago, on 16 May 2005.
The President of the Center for Women’s Studies and Research Dr. Lubna Al-Qadi said that 60 women were awarded degrees in leadership skills in 2018. They were trained in a program offered by the Center, the General Secretariat for Planning and Development, and agencies from the United Nations. Al-Qadi emphasized that women are partners in development, and that development cannot be achieved without true partnership between men and women.
Aneesa Jafer (Mama Aneesa) expressed her happiness to be awarded in the event. She said that women are the source of giving and that Kuwaiti women have proven themselves to be worthy as can be witnessed in their great achievements.
The event also included two discussion panels. The first panel was led by Dr. Lubna Al-Qadi and involved two Kuwaiti media personalities, Amal Al-Abdullah Al-Hamad and Ghada Al-Rozouqi. The discussion focused on the status of women in media. The second panel was led by Dr. Reham Al-Essa. She was joined by Engineer Husnniya Hashem, former Chairman of Kuwait Petroleum Cooperation, and Engineer Maryam Al-Mislm, Head of Projects Control Team in Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC). They discussed the role of women in leadership positions in the oil field in Kuwait. They also discussed their achievements and the challenges they have faced throughout their careers.
