As part of the activities of the Office of the Vice President for Research at Kuwait University in support of scientific research, the Office of External Research Collaboration and Consultation organized a workshop in collaboration with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), titled:
"Bridging Humanities and STEM: A Quantitative Approach Using R",
targeted at members of Kuwait University and individuals interested in research.

The workshop was conducted by Prof. Stefan Gries from the University of California – Santa Barbara, and Dr. Mohammad Al-Enezi, Assistant Professor of Applied Text Linguistics at Kuwait University – College of Arts. It was held over five days, from Sunday, April 13 to Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:15 PM at the College of Administrative Sciences – Sabah Al-Salem University City.

This collaboration between the Research Sector and KFAS is one of the outcomes of the memorandum of understanding signed between Kuwait University and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.
In this context, Dr. Mohammad Al-Enezi, Assistant Professor of Applied Text Linguistics at the College of Arts, stated that the workshop was organized in collaboration with Professor Stefan Gries, one of the world's leading figures in quantitative linguistics. He emphasized that the initiative stems from a deep belief in the importance of the quantitative shift in the humanities, especially at a time that calls for precise tools and scientific methodologies that transcend subjective interpretations and are instead grounded in measurable data.

Dr. Al-Enezi added that numbers, unlike personal impressions, are characterized by accuracy and neutrality, enabling researchers to reach stronger and more robust conclusions. Hence, the invitation extended to Professor Gries aimed to shed light on ways to bridge the gap between the humanities and STEM fields, and to promote a culture of using statistics and quantitative analysis in research related to language, literature, history, philosophy, and other humanities disciplines — all through the use of the R programming language.

In conclusion, Dr. Al-Enezi expressed his sincere gratitude to KFAS for their support in organizing the workshop, and also extended thanks to Prof. Dina Musaed Al-Mailem, President of Kuwait University, and to the Research Sector, represented by Prof. Nouria Mohammed Al-Kandari, for their logistical support in organizing this advanced research workshop.

On her part, Prof. Nouria Al-Kandari, Acting Assistant Vice President for External Research Collaboration and Consultation, stated that the workshop witnessed a high turnout with nearly 40 participants. She praised the participants' commitment and dedication throughout the five-day program.
She also highlighted that the workshop brought together researchers from various research institutions across the country, including Kuwait University faculty members, academic support staff, postgraduate students, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, and Dasman Diabetes Institute.

Prof. Al-Kandari concluded by extending her deep appreciation to the lecturers for their valuable efforts in delivering the workshop and to KFAS for their generous sponsorship.
