
Dr. Khaled Al-Bateni, Director of the Center for Historical Studies at the College of Arts, Kuwait University, inaugurated the Fourth International Conference titled “Social Life in the Abbasid Era: Analytical Approaches and Theoretical Perspectives”. The conference took place in the University’s Conference Center Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15–16, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with the participation of a distinguished group of academics and researchers from Kuwait and abroad.
The conference addresses several themes, including minorities in the Abbasid era, and social life as seen through the lens of literature and poetry of that era. It also sheds light on the roles of women and the Islamic endowment (waqf) in shaping social life during the Abbasid period.
The objective of the conference is to develop analytical and theoretical frameworks that help define the various patterns which characterized social life during the Abbasid era. It also aims to present historical insights into the evolution of social dynamics in that period, while the presented academic papers attempt to highlight the role of individuals as historical agents within the broader socio-historical context.
The conference features lectures by faculty from the Department of History at the College of Arts, Kuwait University: Dr. Bader Al-Rashidi, Dr. Maryam Al-Kandari, Dr. Nayef Al-Shamroukh, and Dr. Sanad Abdulfattah. Additional speakers include Dr. Mohammed Al-Saddani from the American University, Dr. Bayan Amro from Jordan, Dr. Fatima Belhouari from Algeria, Dr. Iradah Al-Khayyat from Lebanon, Dr. Amna Al-Shammari from the Department of Arabic Language at Kuwait University, independent researcher Ahmed Al-Sumait from Kuwait, and Dr. Mahmoud Ibrahim from Beni Suef University in Egypt.
