Under the patronage of the Acting Dean of the College of Arts, Dr. Abdul Mohsen Madaj Al-Madaj, the Cultural Committee of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature held a symposium entitled “Universities of the Future: Oasis of Science and Culture” presented by Prof. Moudi Al-Hamoud, Chairman of the Founding Council of Abdullah Al-Salem University, and moderated by Dr. Abdullah Al-Jasmi, Vice Dean for Consulting and Training at the College.
Prof. Moudi Al-Hamoud spoke at the symposium about the developments of culture with the passage of time, the development of the mechanisms and tools of civilization, and its coupling with science, where this legacy was transformed into the science of developing robots wich have become a companion to modern man in factories and offices, adding that it may also have an impact on culture in the future, touching on the development of our current era and the development of its tools, cultural and scientific output, and the entry of technology into our worlds in every field.
"The field of culture is no exception, and the question is always who is behind this progress? Who are its components? And does culture have a place in this rapidly developing technical world and its institutions?"
She added: “There is no doubt that universities are the main incubator of this development, and they are the bridge of civilizational transition in sciences, as well as the bridge of cultural development, although universities differ in their nature. Universities that still maintain their traditional, solid style in their sciences and educational methods are now accompanied by modern universities (fourth generation universities), and they collectively embrace culture and expand its manifestations, and play an important role in bridging the gap between science, education and culture among learners and society.”
Prof. Al-Hamoud touched on fourth-generation universities, stating that they are modern universities adhering to the requirements of the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by tremendous technological progress, artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced scientific research platforms. They are universities that combine the academic wing and the research wing represented by research centers together under their roofs.
She explained that these universities are required today to bring about development in the cultural field by introducing new cultural concepts and instilling them in the youth, such as: the culture of achievement, the culture of competition, the culture of creativity, the digital culture, and the environmental culture, while preserving the inherited culture, whether artistic or literary. This is done by inoculating scientific curricula with cultural issues, and through events, activities, and interaction with the cultural and social movement, “as universities are centers of science and cultural influence, and this is their role.”
In conclusion, Prof. Nouriya Al-Rumi thanked the rapporteur of the Cultural Committee of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, Prof. Moudi Al-Hamoud, for the fruitful and distinctive information she presented at the symposium.
