Female students at Kuwait University attained a scientific achievement in recording two astronomical discoveries in the name of the State of Kuwait, with support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
The discoveries are two asteroids located in the main asteroid belt, which is located between Mars and Jupiter. The team consisting of: Maryam Jamali, Noura Al-Musayri, and Marahib Al-Azmi observed the two asteroids for the first time in February 2021, and the two discoveries were confirmed by the relevant authorities in June 2024.
The two new asteroids are currently being studied to determine their orbits in order to include them in the approved global astronomical catalogs of asteroids. The International Astronomical Union, supported by NASA, will also provide female students with the opportunity to name the two asteroids that were discovered, in addition to a certificate for each asteroid.
